Bad vs. Badly Bad vs. Badly Bad vs. Badly By Mark Nichol I don’t want to make you feel bad, but because so many writers handle this issue badly, I’m going to discuss the use of bad and badly. Let’s start with badly, which is an adverb. Roughly speaking, an adverb describes how something is done: â€Å"She handled the news badly.† Bad, on the other hand, is most familiar to us as an adjective, but what stymies us sometimes is that it can also be an adverb. In adjectival form, bad provides detail about the noun it accompanies: â€Å"I have a bad feeling about this.† As an adverb, bad modifies the preceding verb: â€Å"Now I don’t feel so bad about it.† If you’re in doubt about which adverbial form to use, test it by replacing badly (or is it bad?) with a synonym, such as poorly. (â€Å"She handled the news poorly.†) That looks and sounds right. But would poor work? (â€Å"She handled the news poor.†) Definitely not; the form badly is correct. Now test the sentence that uses the adverbial form of bad: â€Å"Now I don’t feel too poorly about it,† or â€Å"Now I don’t feel too poor about it†? Hmm I’m not sure. So I’ll try another synonym: â€Å"Now I don’t feel too wretchedly about it,† or â€Å"Now I don’t feel too wretched about it†? The short form is the clear winner here. But why? What’s different about the two adverbial forms? The issue is complicated by the fact that two types of verbs exist: action verbs and linking verbs. Handled, in the first example above, is an action verb because she handled she did something. Linking verbs, on the other hand, describe a state of being: I think, therefore I am. One set of verbs that can perform both functions action and linking are the sense verbs, including feel. (The others are look, smell, and taste; I’ll discuss the omission of hear later.) The sentence â€Å"I feel the breeze† refers to an action; your body is responding to the breeze. If you are unable to feel the breeze because your skin is not sensitive, you could say, â€Å"I feel the breeze badly,† in the sense that your body is ineffective at feeling the breeze. (This usage is awkward and therefore rare, but it is correct.) However, if you’re using feel in the linking, or state-of-being, sense, feel refers to your emotions, not your tactile ability. If you have asked someone to join you on a walk, and the person is bothered by a strong breeze that suddenly whips up, causing some distress oops, there goes the hat! you could say, â€Å"I feel bad about the breeze.† Wouldn’t badly work just as well? Apply the synonym test: â€Å"I feel wretchedly about the breeze.† Clunk. â€Å"I feel wretched about the breeze.† Click. That explains why you want something bad, not badly. (To want something badly is to do a poor job of wanting it almost the opposite meaning.) That’s why you’re not doing too bad, rather than badly, right now. Bad is a condition (a linking verb), not a performance (an action verb). So, why isn’t hear an action verb, like its sensory siblings? You can write, â€Å"That feels disgusting† and substitute feels with looks, smells, and tastes, but â€Å"That hears disgusting† doesn’t make sense; we replace hears with sounds in such constructions.† Why is this so? Pierre Elliott Trudeau Reason Over Passion History Essay Pierre Elliot Trudeau was the most influential leader in Canadian politics. He was a charismatic, charming, honest and an intellectually brilliant individual. Trudeau inherently believed in a fair society where minority rights are protected and all citizens are treated equally. He used his unique skills to build a better Canada, where its citizens enjoyed a superior quality of life and standard of living. Elected in 1968, Trudeau was responsible for implementing landmark legislation, which significantly impacted Canadian lives in a positive way. In 1969, Trudeau enacted the official languages Act, which enabled both English and French speaking Canadians equal rights. In 1970, Trudeau implemented the War Measures Act for the safety of the Canadian people against terrorists acts. Furthermore, in 1982 Trudeau revamped the Canadian Charter of Right and Freedoms, which changed the shape of Canadian democracy  [1]  and gave Canadians a new outlook towards life. Trudeau allowed Canada t o evolve into what he perceived as a just society, which created personal and political freedom in addition to unity within the nation. 1969, a year in which Francophones (a term used to describe primary French speaking individuals) would be able to use their talents to the full,  [2]  as Trudeau enacted the Official Languages Act, otherwise known as Bill C-120. This act entrenched the rights of Francophones to their language wherever they lived and gave public servants the choice of their language of work  [3]  . Trudeau stated, Either one nation with two languages or ultimately two separate nations  [4]  . Trudeau, advocating Canadian unity aimed at opposing the concept of a French Canada  [5]  . The Trudeau government wanted to recognize French and English languages as equal. Trudeau, a francophone himself stated that he wanted increased identification of Francophones within Canada  [6]  ; Bill C-120 gave greater responsibility to French Canadians in the federal government, as section five declared that the decisions of the federal courts were to be issued in both English and French  [7]  . Section eight, which stated that, both English and French versions of a law enacted by the Parliament of Canada are equally authentic  [8]  , and section nine which assured that each agency of a Crown Corporation in Ottawa or in a bilingual district must ensure that services were available in both official languages  [9]  . Trudeau covered every aspect of ensuring equality and unity of both English and French speaking Canadians. Trudeau hoped to re-channel Quebec nationalism  [10]  and eliminate separatism in Quebec. Bill C-120 appeared promising as it has progressively more support throughout Canada. The Bill has been revised twice to strengthen some of its provisions  [11]  and in 1982 parts of Bill C-120 was constitutionalized by its placing in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Languages Act was appreciated by many Canadians however small minorities insisted on committing to the independence of Quebec. The Front de Liberation or the FLQ wanted to ensure greater participation of the French speaking public. In October 1970 the FLQ became known as Canadas Terrorist group  [12]  , as they kidnapped two public officials James Cross and Pierre Laporte. Roman Pearson of the Centre of Canadian Studies stated that terrorism was something that Canadians read about in the newspapers; it was not supposed to occur in Canada, but the FLQ changed all of that  [13]  . It was also reported that in August 1970 FLQ terrorist were training with Palestinian terrorists, and had vowed a series of political assassinations  [14]  . The FLQ were determined, in hopes that Quebec would somehow become independent; conversely Trudeau had a different mindset. He believed that no terrorist group should be able to roam free in the streets of Canada  [15]  . As he was be ing questioned by a local news reporter he stated that, as people are being abducted let them be protected, its only natural  [16]  In response to the FLQ on October 16th 1970, under the leadership of Trudeau, the Federal Government proclaimed the War Measures Act. This act allowed the government to assume emergency powers in the event of war, invasion or insurrection, real or apprehended  [17]  . Trudeaus reasoning suggested that his country was being attacked by a group of individuals who made wrong judgments. The media criticized Trudeau with phrases such as, Canada, a police state  [18]  . The media also took into consideration that some of the Canadian population were shocked in the decisions made. Trudeau replied, well theres a lot of bleeding hearts around who just dont like to see people with helmets and guns, all I can say is go on and bleed, but its more important to keep law and order in a society then to worry about weakly people who dont like the looks of so ldiers  [19]  a reporter commented stating at any cost?  [20]  Trudeau famously replied just watch me!  [21]  His determination and reasoning of FLQ extermination led to nearly over five hundred arrests, and a compromise, from a list of demands that was given to the federal government. The negotiation included the ending of police searches  [22]  , the liberation of twenty three FLQ political prisoners  [23]  and safe conducts out of the country  [24]  . Although Trudeaus actions were extremely controversial 87 % of Canadians were in support during what became known as the October Crisis  [25]  Trudeau received praise for his logical thinking and saved Canada from alleged terrorism. As the FLQ became a lessening issue, human rights became the focal point of the Trudeau administration. In 1982 Trudeau revamped the Canadian constitution combining the British North America Act of 1867 with several amendments in a process which was known as repatriating the constitution  [26]  . The constitution act of 1982 covered fundamental rights and freedoms of all Canadians. It covered such areas as democratic rights, mobility rights, legal rights and equality rights. Trudeau included amendments from the Official Languages Act and he gave minorities political freedom  [27]  within society. Trudeau believed that, a constitution can permit the co-existence of several cultures and ethnic groups within a signal state  [28]  , ultimately meaning unity within the population of Canada. Trudeau used the Constitution as a way of bringing Canadian together. We as the population of Canada are benefiting greatly from Trudeau as we live in strong and prospering country. The Con stitution Act gave Canadians and enlightening envision of the future with a feeling of prosperity towards oneself. For the minorities who were discriminated against such as women, aboriginal Canadians, African Americans and the disabled, the Constitution Act gave this part of the population a chance to live a life where they could be seen as equals. This was something Trudeau strongly believed in as he stated, Canada will be a strong country when Canadians of all provinces feel at home in all parts of the country, and when they feel that all of Canada belongs to them  [29]  . For the current population of Canada, we can safely say that this has been proven true. To the world Canada has been looked at as the safe country  [30]  it has been seen as the country that stays out of harms way  [31]  and protects rather than causes infliction upon  [32]  . Canada is a country of united multiculturalism, which as Canadians, we are proud of. Without Pierre Elliott Trudeau Canada would not hold this reputation. Trudeau once said, We peer so suspiciously at each other that we cannot see that we Canadians are standing on the mountaintop of human wealth, freedom and privilege  [33]  . Trudeau had great hopes for Canada. He believed in nation wide unity, and as a result he fought with solidity for the rights of minority groups, by implementing, manipulating and revamping procedures so that we can all live in a nation where we feel at home. The compound is also accountable for penile erections. Further experiments may lead to its use in memory research and for the treatment of certain neurodegenerative disorders. One of the most exciting discoveries of nitric oxide involves its function in the brain. It was first discovered that nitric oxide played a role in the nervous system in 1982. Small amounts of it prove useful in the opening of calcium ion channels (with glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter) sending a strong excitatory impulse. However, in larger amounts, its effects are quite harmful. The channels are forced to fire more rapidly, which can kill the cells. This is the cause of most strokes. To find where nitric oxide is found in the brain, scientists used a purification method from a tissue sample of the brain. One scientist discovered that the synthesis of nitric oxide required the presence of calcium, which often acts by binding to a ubiquitous cofactor called calmodulin. Friendship Between George and Lennie Essay

In the novel ‘Of Mice and Men’ Steinbeck stresses the importance and abnormality of the friendship between George and Lennie by using a variety of methods. They are complete opposites, yet they share a journey through the struggles of The Great Depression as friends and have faith in the same dream. This pulls them together through the most stressful parts of the novel. These two itinerant workers meet many people along their journey, but the bond between them doesn’t weaken. Right from the beginning of the novel, Steinbeck has portrayed the relationship between Lennie and George appears abnormal. Steinbeck uses dialogue as a method to show the father and son roles between Lennie and George, â€Å"Look, George, look what I done†. This suggests that Steinbeck wants to show Lennie as having the mind of a little boy; when he says this, you think of when a son would say this to a father figure – in this case George – in order to get some kind of r eaction. It is as if Lennie is trying to impress George. This is quite strange, between grown men of around the same age – remembering that Lennie is a fully grown man, but has the mind of a five year old. The author uses historical context as a method and 3rd person narration to allow other people’s views about George and Lennie to be expressed, â€Å"I never seen one guy take so much trouble for another guy.† This implies, that even form one of the first characters that George and Lennie come across, we already get the impression that others think that Lennie and George have a weird friendship and an unlikely bond. A lot of the characters have a tone made to sound suspicious, which I think is purposely written in to the novel be John Steinbeck. People found it unusual because at the time of the Great Depression, no one had friends because everyone was in competition for the same jobs. The other characters noticed this and thought that it was strange. John Steinbeck uses description as a method to emphasise the unusual nature of the friendship between George and Lennie, â€Å"Behind him walked hi opposite, a huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eye†¦Ã¢â‚¬  This suggests that these two men completely contrast each other in looks, as well as state of mind. This makes you wonder why George sticks around Lennie, if he is according to the book, a handsome, smart man. They are opposites in everything, but love each other like brothers. George is very fit, healthy and ready to brace anything thrown at him, whereas Lennie is described as much more careless and in a world of his own. This shows contrasting personalities. From the start of the novel, Lennie is shown to be very childlike. John Steinbeck used metaphors as a method to show this, â€Å"dabbed his big paw†. A big paw is suggesting that Lennie has animalistic qualities, whether that is looks or behaviour; I think it is both. Because of these animalistic qualities, I think that Lennie is immature and hard to handle. This makes the friendship between Lennie and George seem strange because I think to myself â€Å"why would George want to stay around Lennie?† Even though Lennie could wind George up and test his patience, they stick by each other. Throughout the novel, Steinbeck uses foreshadowing as a method to portray how weird Lennie and Georges friendship is, â€Å"He aint no good to you, Candy.† Earlier in the story, Candy’s old dog was shot dead by Carlson, because they decided that he was of no use to anyone anymore. Candy then told George that it would be more comforting to know that he shot the dg himself. At the end of the novel, George shot Lennie â€Å"and he pulled the trigger† because he knew that Lennie didn’t need to live anymore and would be better in heaven. George killed Lennie himself because he remembered what Candy told him about the dog. This is a perfect example of the author using correlation. Also, at the start of the novel, they were on t he run and if George hadn’t shot Lennie, they would have to run again. This shows a cyclical occurrence. Steinbeck’s idea about this friendship makes me realise that it would be extremely unusual to form a friendship during the Great Depression due to everyone fighting for jobs at the same ranches. However, Lennie and George did not compete, they stuck together and found jobs at the same ranch. Lennie treats George like a father and George needs Lennie as a companion. I think this is why they work so well together; it is because they need each other. Their friendship reaches its ultimate test, when George has to choose whether or not to shoot Lennie, as self-sacrifice. However, everything that George does for Lennie is in Lennie’s best interest. John Steinbeck makes the friendship seem unusual, but deep down, I think that it is really just natural for them to need a companion.

Love, Teardrops, and The Hundred Secret Senses Free Online Research Papers The song â€Å"Teardrop† by the 1980s British brand Massive Attack, which was written by the Scottish singer Elizabeth Fraser, explores the theme of love through the diction and use of repetition (Ankeny). Amy Tans fictional novel, the The Hundred Secret Senses, also explores a theme of love similar to that of â€Å"Teardrop† through the depiction of the protagonist Olivias and her husband, Simons relationship. Olivia and Simon first meet in college which, at that time, Simon is still together with his childhood girl, Elza- although shortly after, Elza dies when she goes to the mountains. Regardless, both are still intimate with each other; although most of this intimacy is conveyed through the form of sexual desire, even at this beginning stage, however, Olivia is â€Å"in-love with Simon- goo-goo-eyed, giggly-voiced, floaty-headed† (75). Similarly, in â€Å"Teardrop† the first two lines, â€Å"Love, love is a verb/Love is a doing word† resembles that sexual intimacy between the two characters. The middle of the first verse in â€Å"Teardrop,† â€Å"Shakes me makes me lighter,† describes how love makes one feel as if this deep, intense emotion is able to levitate into the boundless limits of the sky, or as Olivia- in addition to her description of that â€Å"floaty-headed† feeling- further describes how she feels when she is together with Simon : â€Å"I [feel] as if a secret and better part of myself [has] finally been unleashed† and â€Å"I laugh harder, think more deeply, feel more passionately† (77). Even though Olivia knows that Simon has a girlfriend, she also believes that because they are in college, girlfriends come and go- for everyone is changing their minds about everything. However, after Simons comment on how Olivia is basically a good buddy to him, Olivia would ,â€Å"At nightcry angrily† and vow many times to give up any hope of romance with Simon† (77). In addition, Olivias assessments are further reinforced by her insights on Simon treating her merely as Elzas shadow. From Simons references to Elza to him keeping a box of her belongings, how could Olivia not be frustrated? In the second verse of â€Å"Teardrop† the line, â€Å"Black flowers blossom† reflects Olivias and Simons love in that black is symbolic of death, the unknown, and of no hope; moreover, flowers can represent two lovers as well as their feelings for each other. Therefore, black flowers represent the unsure, the insecure (both of which are the unknown), the possible death, and the hopeless love between two people. The fact that Olivia is basically Elzas replacement and the fact that even from the start she believes there is no hope between them shows their unsure, unknown, and hopeless love. However, comparable to how â€Å"Teardrops† lyrics say â€Å"black flowers blossom,† Olivias and Simons love also blossoms. Though A Hundred Secret Senses is also a novel about the growth of Olivia, her love with Simon is a major element in this growth. In an attempt to get Simon and Olivia closer as lovers (as well as for other personal reasons), one of the characters invites them to visit a village in China where all three adults end up sleeping on the same bed. It is through this nearly forced experience that enables Olivia and Simon to really get to discuss their relationship with each other. Before, Olivia thought that love was â€Å"a trick on the brainIt floods the cells that transmit worrydrowns them with biochemical bliss (312-3). However, after the trip to China, Olivia is now capable of saying, â€Å"I once thought love was supposed to be nothing but bliss. I now know it is also worry and grief, hope and trust† (399). Evidently, the fact that Olivia goes from this nearly impossible relationship of a replacement, to the final acceptance of the emotions that come with loving Simon, demons trates the blossoming of their love. Furthermore, the repetition of the line â€Å"Teardrop on the fire,† in â€Å"Teardrop,† also reflects Olivias description of her love. First, a teardrop is a substance evoked from three contrasting feelings- sadness, anger, and happiness. Secondly, a fire is symbolic of rage, a mix of emotions, and chaos. Therefore, a teardrop on the fire may indicate the emotions on top of all the emotional events. In other words, this is similar to how both Olivia and Simon are able to cry from the quarrels, misunderstandings, rage, and the joyful, pleasurable moments of their lives. This fact, in addition, further illustrates how Olivias and Simons love is also able to blossom. For again, love is the â€Å"worry and grief, hope and trust† (399). The final verse of â€Å"Teardrop† consists of two repeating lines â€Å"Stumbling a little/Stumbling a little.† These lines give to say that in spite of the fact that love provokes hope, (as shown by the line â€Å"Black flowers blossom†) it still makes one (or two) unstable. Additionally, the use of the word â€Å"little† is similar to how Olivia portrays her current love relationship with Simon as â€Å"Were still working things outThe petty arguments, snipes, and gripes, they still crop upBut its easier to remember how unimportant they are, how they shrink the heart and make life small† (399). Through â€Å"Teardrops† examination of love from how love makes one feel that excitement, how the ambiguity of love can evolve and thrive, how love evokes both the positive and negative emotions, and finally, how even though love can be hope and excitement, because it also comes with the negative emotions, one will continue to be â€Å"Stumbling a little.† Similarly, the relationship between Olivia and Simon resemble these notions of love through their relationship from when they first meet in college to when they are called on a trip to China, during which passion, pain, and hope are all indications of their love for each other. New SAT Scoring Advantage SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips While the new SAT is out of 1600 and the old SAT is out of 2400, the two aren't directly proportional; you can't just multiply your old SAT score by 2/3 and expect the result to be how you'd do on the new SAT. The only way to know for sure how you'd do on the new test (besides taking the new SAT exam) is to use the College Board's data to convert your score from old to new SAT. What’s Changed About SAT Scoring? College Board premiered the new SAT March 2016, with a new out-of-1600 scoring system that now gives one out-of-800 Math score and out-of-800 Reading score. The increased importance of Math to the overall SAT score isn’t all that’s changed, however; the difficulty of the individual sections appears to have shifted as well. Based on data released by the College Board, a 700 on the old SAT Math isn’t the same as a 700 on the new SAT Math section, and a 700 on the old SAT Reading and 700 on SAT Writing isn't the same as a 700 on the new SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section. Even after adjusting for the 1600/2400 change, it’s easier to get a higher score on the new SAT than it was on the old SAT, especially if you had an average score. The amount by which you’d score higher varies with your scoring range. Old SAT Math vs. New SAT Math The comparison for this section is pretty straightforward: based on the concordance tables released this spring by the College Board, there’s an average 29 point increase on the new SAT Math section compared to scores on the old version. This average does not take into account number of people who score at each score point, however; you can’t expect score 30 points better no matter what your old SAT score was. The graph below sheds a little more light on the matter: Here's an example of how the score difference between the old and new SAT Math sections works out: If you got a 730/800 on the old SAT Math section (shown as a black vertical bar in the graph above) and took the new SAT with exactly the same preparation and skills, you’d likely score a 760/800. If you scored around the national average of 510 on the old SAT Math section, you'd similarly expect to see a new SAT Math score of 540. Old SAT Reading/Writing vs. New SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Comparing old SAT Reading Writing and new SAT Reading and Writing is a little trickier because reading and writing have been smushed into one score on the new SAT (Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, or EBRW). The College Board has kindly provided concordance charts to help out with this calculation which show that you can still expect to see higher scores on the new SAT EBRW compared to the old SAT Reading and Writing section scores. If the two tests were exactly equivalent, you’d expect that the combined old Reading and Writing section scores (a range of 400-1600) divided by two would be the same as the concorded new SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score (a range of 200-800), but this is not the case. Instead, students can expect to score between zero and sixty points better on EBRW than they would have on each of the Critical Reading and Writing sections on the old SAT. The graph below gives a more detailed look at how the score increases are distributed across old SAT combined Reading and Writing scores: To put this graph in context, consider the following example: If you took the old SAT, got Critical Reading 700 and Writing 710 (a combined score of 1410, shown as a black vertical bar in the graph above), and took the new SAT with exactly the same preparation and skills, you could expect to score a 740/800 on Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. If you got around the national average old SAT scores of 500 on Reading and 480 on Writing, you could expect to score a 550 on Evidence-Based Reading and Writing - a huge jump. How Do the Changes to SAT Scoring Affect You? The 2016-2017 school year is a unique time for college applications because colleges will be accepting both old and new SAT scores. Theoretically, schools have access to the concordance tools needed to compare old and new SAT scores and admissions officers will do their due diligence to understand that it’s easier to get higher scores on the new SAT. Schools won’t be superscoring between the old and new SAT, so it’s not like you can get a 760 Math on the new SAT and combine that with your Critical Reading and Writing scores from the old SAT for a higher superscore. In practice, however, a SAT result of 510 Math/ 650 Evidence-Based Reading and Writing makes a better impression than 470 Math/590 Reading/590 Writing (even though according to the College Board’s concordance tables and its conversion tool, these scores are equivalent). Even after the old SAT has been phased out entirely from college applications, it will take admissions officers a little while to adjust and align their unconscious, split-second assessments of student scores with the new reality that more students will be getting higher scores on the SAT, and so a 760 isn't as impressive as it used to be. Therefore, if you took the old SAT and scored in a range where you can expect to see at least a 20-point increase in nominal score, you should consider taking the new SAT to see if you can get a higher score. Add effective prep to that score increase, and you might very well be able to get a high enough score on the new SAT to step yourself over the threshold for acceptance for colleges previously just out of reach. Though FDR was a competent enough scholar, school was never a priority for him. He passed the bar exam but never completed his degree. He had difficulty in law school but seemed unconcerned. â€Å"FDRâ₠¬â„¢s attitude toward law school was similar to Ulysses S. Grant’s view of West Point: it was a hurdle but should not be taken too seriously.† (Smith,96). His ability to face these challenges in life was an example of how he would handle challenges later in his presidency as he would not be stressed or overwhelmed by the situations he would face. â€Å"That was a trait he would hone to an art form in public life. ‘If something was unpleasant and he didn’t want to know about it, he just ignored it and never talked about it,’ said Eleanor. ‘I think he always thought that if you ignore a thing long enough it would settle itself.’† (Smith, 101).
